Monsters and how they have developed
Distortion of what we consider 'normal'.
Baron Samedi: (Master of the dead)
Mystical figure is a spirit that can be summoned by voodoo priest. Uses poisons and ritual burials to convince the victims they are dead.
- This character is portrayed in a lot of films/ television.
Ghosts:
-Spirit of the dead.
- Evil spirits / good spirits. (Harry Potter, Casper the friendly ghost, Scrooge)
Werewolves:
- Human transforming into a wolf.
- Monstrous hybrid of human and wolf. (Thriller / Harry Potter)
- Cartesium Dualism. This essentially is 'dualism' which is the belief that the body and mind are separate. So in the case of werewolves, although physically their body is in the shape of a wolf, their mind is completely separate and they do not think like a wolf, they think like a human because of the human/wolf hybrid.
- Separation of the body and mind.
- Alien and a threat to society.
Vampires:
- Nasferatu 1920 (first portrayal of vampire)
Silent movie.
- Dracula
Travels to London and infects the city.
- Compared with capitalism.
Vampires can make us fear infections in society.
- AIDS (80's) Sexual desires are dangerous.
- Terrorism
- Computer viruses
Contagion (21st century) terrorism.
9/11 became a fear to society. Memories are relived on that day every year.
-Flying
-Terrorists
-America
Vampires of today (twilight)
- Preserve youth
- Fear of getting old
- As there is a fear of getting old, society has introduced creams, serums etc all to help with 'anti-ageing' as ageing is now seen as a bad thing. There is also obviously cosmetic procedures that people can have as well to prevent ageing skin.
Kat put us into groups and gave us characters that are portrayed in horror films or tv series. We got psychopathic killer which i thought was a really good character to discuss and everyones perception on a 'psycho' is different.
As a group we thought that they tend to live very normal lives and the psychopath in them is because of a mental illness such as bipolar for example and that is why they have 2 sides to them. You wouldn't be able to point them out as it's all in their head and to everyone else they just look 'normal' or fit into society.
We then listed some films/tv/real life scenarios that we could link with psychopaths:
-Dexter
-Scream
-Luther
-Gone girl
-Hindley
-Saw
-Scream queens
-the following
- Arthur Shawcross
